There are a number of occasions that you need to consignees VAT number, for both import and export, as well as filing the VAT returns. If you give an incorrect VAT number it can take hours to resolve the issue. You can very quickly double check your supplier or customers email address at the EU website.
EORI
Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI)
The EORI Number was introduce to speed up customs clearance and improve security for goods leaving or entering the EU, implemented in 2009. You should have an EORI number if you are exporting outside the EU. The number for most companies goes as follow; take the nine digit VAT number and add 000 onto the end. i.e. GB987654321 becomes GB987654321000.
Check the validity of your EORI Number in the EORI Number Validator. If not valid, apply at GOV.uk website
The following countries are not part of the EU VAT area:
- Andorra
- The Channel Islands
- Gibraltar
- Mount Athos
- San Marino
- Vatican City
